Older Americans Act of 1965 Program
The Older Americans Act of 1965 (also called Title III) was passed and implemented in Tennessee to provide an array of supportive and nutrition services for persons 60 and over. Services funded through the Title III network are designed to allow older persons to reside in the community and in their own homes with the maximum amount of dignity for as long as possible. The Older Americans Act requires AAADs to specify in the Area Plan a minimum percentage of the funds received by each area agency for Title IIIB social services that will be expended to deliver each of the following categories of services: 1) Access services including Information and Assistance, Transportation, Outreach and Case Management; 2) In-Home services consisting of Homemaker and personal care services, Visiting and Telephone Reassurance, Chore and Supportive Services for families of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related brain disorders; and 3) Legal Assistance. Additional state plan requirements include funding of Nursing Home Ombudsman Services; Congregate and Home-Delivered Meals; and Multipurpose Senior Centers which in a majority of instances, serve as focal points through which community services are accessed. OAA funded services are targeted to older individuals with the greatest economic need, with particular attention to low-income minority individuals, those with the greatest social needs, and those residing in rural areas.
